This post is a response to a post I put up a year and some months ago about the The ViewSonic WAPBR-100 along with the discussion that has occurred over time in the post's comments. I think it is interesting as to the Google juice and the conversation this little lark has created. And if it were not for the conversation, I would not have instantly had a solution to... oh, first a story.I have a server. Not the most powerful, but it has real RAID and a 64 bit Linux and heaps of memory and half a terabyte of storage. My baby is strong and has good bones. My baby is also loud and hot - so much for 24/7 operation. Then it hit me, I could plug my baby monster into a wi-fi access point and run it in the basement where it is cool and dry and I would not have to worry about the noise. So I did. And in doing so I brought my ViewSonic WAPBR-100 out of mothballs to hook the server into the network remotely.
But WPA2 encryption did not work in bridge mode with the replacement Linksys firmware. This was an odd little quirk because it had WPA2 available in other modes. Time to pull the trigger on the discussion about DD-WRT that was happening on my old post.
My friends, lets not quibble here anymore - just load DD-WRT. It works. It works well. It is beautiful. And adds yet more functionality to the once annoying paper weight that Viewsonic brought to the world.
Get it here (I'm using the "dd-wrt.v24_micro_generic.bin") - http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv3/dd-wrt/downloads.html
Good Day, Sir. Harrumph.

I did it just a couple of days before you. Works pretty well, plus its nice to have the same interface on all of my wireless gear.
I never thought about it, but, that is a huge check in the plus column.
I did the linksys upgrade then the dd-wrt upgrade it failed now I can't get to anything.
Did you have to change the .bin to .trx ? Can you do it without upgrading to linksys? I have another one but I don't want to have another brick.
I never went from the viewsonic firmware directly to dd-wrt (though, I can't imagine why it should not work)
There was one step in my original upgrade to Linksys firmware post that may be key: "Browse to http://192.168.1.2/fw-conf.asp and on this simple form, set "Firmware Header" to "disable" then click Apply. Wait. Then click 'Go Home.'"
The original post is here...

I tried to find out if you could fix your brick by forcing the firmware in via TFTP, but I think that that only works with a wrt54g. Source: http://oldwiki.openwrt.org/WAPBR100Howto.html
I have upgrade to dd-wrt firmware. What is the default username/password for it? I left blank for username field and typed in "admin" for password field. but still it's not right. Thank you
Username: root
Password: admin
The fix for the WLAN LED not functioning is resolved in a post on the DD-WRT website if anyone is having that issue after upgrade: http://wwwn.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=9464&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15&sid=00e676453738aecd6dc6de0ba1ede3ae
Hi-- I had an old WAPBR-100 and followed these directions, which worked flawlessly. My noob problem now is knowing exactly how to set the dd-wrt firmware. I want to use this to access my existing wireless network for my replaytv. Is this best set up as an access point, a client bridge, etc? What are the best settings in terms of ip addresses, etc? Thanks
I am not familiar with the Viewxsonic WAPBR-100, but I am familiar with DD-WRT, and have installed it on several Linksys routers. I have to say, it is a huge improvement over what Linksys ships!
Hooray for Open Source once again!
